Arnie Cashelin, Steve Worley, and I just had a meeting with Arthur
Schwartzberg (Chairman of the Board) and others at Xaos Tools in San
Francisco. Here is a report on the meeting and some of the things we
discussed:
MY IMPRESSION OF ARTHUR AND XAOS TOOLS:
I was very impressed with Arthur's awareness of and sensitivity towards the
problems of plug-in developers and SGI LightWave customers. In fact, not just
Arthur, but everyone there seemed very "in touch" with LightWave users in
particular and the SGI community in general. I gave them copies of several
relevant mailing list posts regarding plug-in development and ScreamerNet
(see the big news below) which they read with genuine interest.
One thing which emerged from the meeting was Xaos Tools' commitment to
LightWave in spite of how difficult it is to make a viable business selling
software for "only" $2,500 in the low volume SGI marketplace. Xaos Tools
considers themselves a strong ally to NewTek and to all of us in the
LightWave camp.
I think LightWave's presence on the SGI (and Xaos Tools' development of that
presence) is an important part of NewTek's strategy to win market share, and
we should support Xaos Tools and SGI LW wherever possible.
SGI LIGHTWAVE PLUG-IN DEVELOPMENT:
Xaos Tools was very concerned about what they could do to help developers
create plug-ins for the SGI platform. However, if you're hoping for an SGI on
every developer's desk courtesy Xaos Tools, you may be disappointed. Xaos
Tools is working hard to free up a few loaner machines from SGI, which they
will then make available to developers as best they can. If you think you
qualify for such a "loan", contact Kris Jackson of Xaos Tools at 415.487.7040
or kris@xaostools.com.
Another idea that came up was the possibility of Xaos Tools doing marketing
and distribution of plug-ins for their respective developers. Marketing,
especially, is something many developers complain about not having the
resources for. I think Xaos Tools is prepared to not only do all the
worldwide sales and marketing, but also handle all the manufacturing.
One question that has appeared on this list recently was "Is there any
motivation for plug-in developers to port their plug-ins to the SGI
platform?" Here are some reasons why the answer is 'yes':
1) Although the SGI LightWave user base is (currently) smaller than that of
other platforms, those users are more likely to buy plug-ins than users of
other platforms. SGI owners often want/need all the bells and whistles they
can get, and the size of a single project can frequently justify the expense
of a plug-in.
2) If Xaos Tools handles all the expenses beyond development, all royalties
made by the developer will be pure profit. As Arthur put it, "would you
rather earn $25,000 per month but spend $22,000 in marketing and other
expenses to get it, or would you rather just get a check for $4,000 and focus
your time on your real expertise of product development".
3) Regardless of other considerations, the SGI platform is high-profile and
"sexy". The fact that Xaos Tools will market and promote your plug-in in a
very visible, high-end forum is, if nothing else, a great marketing play, and
should have positive repercussions for your plug-in sales with PC LightWave.
4) see SGI LightWave ScreamerNet part below
5) Arnie Cashelin is developing a cross platform, ui toolkit, which should
solve many of the plug-in development issues in the future.
SGI LIGHTWAVE SCREAMERNET:
Ok, here's some really big news: ScreamerNet is now included with SGI LW. It
is "free", although Xaos Tools will be charging $250 for setting up the
software key on up to 10 SGIs. Xaos Tools has people who do this all day.
I hope this answers many of the concerns that have come from posters to this
list. I appreciate your comments and the well reasoned arguments (of yours) I
was able to present to Arthur definitely carried weight.
